laser tripwire

I made a laser tripwire for Fluxx theatre company. The system was installed at the Soho Theatre.

Chris wanted something that would be interactive and amusing for the audience. As the audience entered the space to sit down, they broke the invisible tripwire and a random farmyard or DIY sample was played over the PA.

Here’s what they said:

MATTHEW VENN is an inventive and industrious artist exploring a range of approaches to improvisation.  His particular skils in working with technology allowed him to create a unique laser-based interactive device for use during Fluxx’s ten-year anniversary series of shows at the Soho Theatre in 2008.  The device – generating sounds triggered by movements of spectators – proved a great hit.

sound and movement performance

This Friday 14th November I’m performing with Jenny Hill. We’re doing a sound and movement duet – with me creating the sound using my voice and live performance rig.

Jenny Hill and Matthew Venn. Jenny is a dancer and choreographer who has recently been focusing on improvised performance. Her performances are quirky, mercurial and expansive. She creates an imaginative, multi-textural world, drawing on different parts of the psyche. Tonight she is performing with Matthew, an electronic engineer and musician.

Shahar Dor, an internationally acclaimed improvisor from Israel is coming to London. Shahar is known for his character driven and cinematic approach towards the body.  He shows a remarkable degree of humour, sensitivity and freedom in the communicative aspects of spontaneous performance. http://www.artness.org/

Kate Hilder. Kate’s performances have an innocent, spacious quality, with unexpected shifts from pedestrian to caricature to the poetic – watching Kate perform is like riding a space hopper through an emotional landscape.
